History of the Multnomah Dental Society
The following is the first step in recording the history of the Multnomah Dental Society. What records do remain from the early years are often sketchy with large gaps in time. Information for this history was pieced together from a variety of sources including History of Dentistry in Oregon by Dr. W. Claude Adams. This document is not intended to be a definitive accounting but rather an attempt to record the past before more records are lost. It is hoped this narrative will continue to expand in future years. June 1999
- The Beginning
The following is taken from the History of Dentistry in Oregon.
Although the only minutes of the Portland Dental Society (predecessor to the Portland District Dental Society) known to be in existence record the first meeting as January 8, 1907, evidence does exist that indicates an earlier formation. A one-cent postcard dated August 30, 1892 announces the calling of a meeting of the Portland dentists on August 31 “for the purpose of forming a permanent dental society.”
Mention of the Portland Dental Society in the minutes of the organizational meeting of the second, and present, Oregon State Dental Association on June 14, 1893. (“Pursuant to a call issued by a committee appointed by the Portland Dental Society, a number of dentists throughout the State met in the parlors of the Portland Dental Society in the Hotel Portland and proceeded to organize a State Dental Society.”) An item in Polk’s Dental Directory, 1892 states that the Portland Dental Society was organized August 31, 1892.
In June 1912 the Oregon State Dental Association created district dental societies as components of the state organization. The Portland Dental Society was the first in the state to be organized and as such changed its name to the Portland District Dental Society on November 5, 1912. The “District” was enlarged to include Hillsboro, Forest Grove, Gresham, Oregon City and St. Johns. On June 3, 1941 the Oregon City constituents withdrew to help organize the Clackamas County Dental Society.
On May 15, 1962 the name was changed to the Multnomah County Dental Society and in 1964 MCDS was incorporated. On May 20, 1986 the word “county” was dropped from the official name.
